This week we at Addicted are crushing on Royal!

Royal is an up and coming singer with pipes of gold and a serious work ethic. Born in Oshawa, Ontario, she relocated to Vernon, B.C., making the west coast her home. Music was always apart of her life, though she never thought it would become her career. But it didn’t take long for Royal to go from singing at home with her sisters to performing in front of an audience, but it was that family connection that really gave her that start. While perfoming at a family function in Saskatoon, Royal was discovered by producer Jack Lenz. Pretty soon she was in the studio developing her talent and sound with professional guidance. That time spawned her first album, Seasons in 2009. Shortly thereafter Royal moved to Vancouver. There, is was picked from move than 200 artists to become a finalist in the Peak Performance Project BC, a program where established musicians and industry professionals mentor aspiring young musicians in a series of bootcamps and showcases. From there, her sound was solidified, and here’s the result: her new single “Wild”. Take a listen below:

Take a read of Royal’s take on romance below!
What is the first thing that you notice about a potential love interest?

Their eyes. They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul. If you can see past their charms, you can see their true self.

What is your ideal first date/ what’s the best date you’ve ever been on?

My ideal first date is to be completely surprised.

For example, in the summer of 2014, I was in the midst of the amazing chaos that was the Peak Performance Project. I was trying to complete each stage of the competition as a solo artist, which included creating a brand, writing ten songs in a week, and throwing together a band, etc., all while I was working a full-time day job! I was completely unprepared and over my head and I loved it… and then this dude had the audacity to ask me out on a date!

After numerous attempts, I finally gave in. He asked me what I would like to do and I told him to surprise me. We met up in between our places and rode our bikes to a beautiful spot at the beach. He popped open a bottle of wine and not just any bottle. He had done his research and brought my favourite bottle. It was creepy, but charming. He played the perfect playlist on his iPod dock and we sat on the sand just talking and laughing for hours as the sun set. It was the best date I’ve ever been on and a beautiful beginning.

What’s your instant deal breaker?

No teeth. That’s where I draw the line.

In all seriousness, an instant deal breaker for me is someone who is all for one, and not one for all. One of the most important characteristics in the people I surround myself with is that they are team players and want to build people up, and not tear them down. Whether it be a love interest, a friend or someone in the industry, I believe that we all need to work together towards greatness, rather than to use and abuse people for our own selfish purposes to get to where we want to be in life.

What’s the strangest thing someone has done to get your attention?

The strangest thing someone has done to get my attention occurred at a party on my friend’s farm. Yes, that’s how we do it in small towns!

We were out in the field, the music was blasting, the fire was roasting, and laughter and chaos filled the night air. I noticed the most beautiful boy standing amongst the crowd. He went to another school and I had admired him from a distance, just waiting for my chance. Now here he was. I thought to myself, tonight is the night – he will be mine! But, like always, I got caught up having fun with my friends and that boy soon became the last thing on my mind. While chatting with my pals, suddenly there was a soft bang. I spun around to see that beautiful boy standing in front of me, with the biggest grin on his face. Why was he smiling, might you ask? He shot my bum with an air gun. Love hurts.

If there was one piece of advice you could give to other men/women out there, what would it be?

The advice I would like to pass on was inspired by my mother; the most incredible woman on this planet.

She raised my sisters and I to love ourselves, to become our own people, and to never solely rely on someone else for our own happiness. I pass on her advice like this; “Partners are not a must, they are a plus.”

You should never rely solely on one person for your happiness. Your happiness should come from within.
