The Starving Artist – First Blog Post!

Posted by ROYAL Category: Category 1

Hello friends!

I’ve been an independent musician for over ten years now. Not everyone understands the lifestyle that goes along with committing your life to an art, it has a lot of ups and downs. The “beautiful disaster” is what I like to call it. My life consists of working multiple day jobs, running from one to the next, running my business as an indie artist, (which is a 24/7 job/s in itself) playing gigs, writing and recording music, and trying to maintain my sanity and snatch a few hours of sleep when possible. The other main thing is trying to stay healthy. Having a long list of health issues my entire life, along with the tight financial belt, makes eating cheap and healthy sometimes quite difficult. So I learnt to cook and invent things as I go, I’ve searched high and low for places to shop and grab stuff on the go, for specials, or for whatever, and wanted to share it all with you! THUS! Here is my first blog entry post for:

THE STARVING ARTIST

FIRST ENTRY: MONDAY-MONDAY

Living in Vancouver I have explored the wealth of healthy options around the city. I came across one particular grocer who brought a sparkle to my eye. Whom could this magnificent grocer be?

WHOLE FOODS

Now this may surprise you, for those of you who know of this place, as it’s not the most affordable grocery store. However, I did find a great deal for Mondays.

There are a few locations that I know of in Vancouver, as well the store ventures out to the US, where it started.

On Mondays they have a pre-packaged food deal with a variety of options. It’s a large pack of either:

  1. Spaghetti and meat balls
  2. Lemon chicken, roasted vegetables and potato wedges
  3. Plus more options!

You choose one of the pre-packaged meals PLUS get a big salad on the side for free. This meal usually lasts me 4 days, and on Mondays they are priced at $20! That’s $5 a day for dinner, plus the salad lasts for lunches as well! It’s a wicked deal. When I know I’m about to have a crazy week, I prep for it by grabbing this meal deal. SO there’s one option for you!

Normally for this blog I will post one recipe or deal find per entry, however this being my first ever post, I will let you in on TWO of my finds! The second being my soup recipe. Here it is!

SECOND ENTRY: YUMMY TUMMY SOUP

Key ingredient: Campbell’s Chicken Broth (comes in 900 mL. cardboard carton) 30% less sodium. Ready to use variety.
1 whole yellow onion
5 cloves of garlic

To start, satay onions on low to medium eat, slowly add some garlic, and a 1/4 cup chicken soup broth. Let simmer for about 3 mins, then add 1 cup of chicken broth.

Next Add:
Half purple or green cabbage
Half of a large sweet potato
Let boil for a couple minutes, then add:
3 carrots
1 chicken bouillon cube and cut it up in to pieces and add to soup.
Add remainder of chicken broth and 2 shakes of pepper, 1 shake seasoning or plain salt and one shake Tumeric.

Boil till veggies are nearly done, then let simmer for a few minutes. Keep lid on pot so you don’t loose the broth.

Now eat and enjoy!

Side Note: Because of the sweet potato this soup has a hint of sweetness -a delectable romance between sweet and salty! Sometimes if I want something to taste a bit saltier, I add a tiny bit of soya sauce. Mmm. I also sometimes throw in some kale or spinach for some more greens!

All of these veggies are inexpensive to buy, and all of that garlic and onion will held keep your body strong to fight off colds and flus!
